What to look for in a Wedding DJ

1. Experience with weddings specifically?
Wedding Dj requirements are completely unique.  Everything from music selection, sound equipment and handling the guest requests are typically specific to weddings.  Just because someone is a long-time nightclub DJ, does not mean they are a great wedding DJ.  Make sure you ask about what kind of events they specialize as a DJ.

2. What is the experience of the wedding DJ?
What comes with experience is the expanded knowledge of music and how to deal with unexpected situations. Wedding events are full of surprises. A Family member really wants a special song, or perhaps how to deal with a power outage. In our opinion, experience is like an insurance policy. Always good to have for those unexpected situations!

3. Does your wedding DJ have the right personality for the wedding party?
Many weddings require the services of an MC or Master of Ceremonies. Not only is this role to keep the itinerary straight, the MC brings a lot of character to the wedding. Having a good match will ensure both guests and the wedding party are all pleased and entertained during the special day.

4. What kind of sound equipment does the wedding DJ offer?
Like any home audio equipment, not all professional sound equipment is the same. High quality sound ensures everyone hears the music and speeches at a comfortable level. A delicate balance of high end frequencies for detail and low end bass for the hard hitting impact during dances.

5. How does the wedding DJ handle requests?
Always ask how the DJ handles requests because inevitably there will be song requests at every wedding. A good understanding of the process and how the wedding DJ can accommodate will ensure the dance floor is packed from start to finish.

6. What kind of music is in the wedding DJ’s library?
Digging into this question will provide some insight into what depth and variety of genres the DJ is able to play. A responsible wedding DJ will never agree to an event where they don’t feel confident they can entertain the crowd. This is especially important when there are special ethnic or religious requirements.

7. Does the wedding DJ have reviews/referrals of past events?
With platforms like Facebook, Google, and Wedding Wire, an experienced wedding DJ should have several reviews and some referrals to provide you with impartial feedback of their past performances.

8. Additional options available?
Ask about additional options you might like - uplighting, dry ice, photo booths. Many wedding DJ’s are able to provide additional services so you can save time sourcing individually.

9. Videos of past engagements?
Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words, and video is worth even more! Video footage will provide a lot of insight in just a few seconds of footage. Is the crowd enjoying the music, presentation is suitable? A few video clips can help you decide fairly quickly.

10. What do you have in terms of a backup DJ or Equipment?
Ask about some contingency plans. People get sick, and equipment tends to fail at the worst times. A good wedding DJ will have answers for these tough questions. Especially with the changing conditions of the pandemic, it is very important to have contingency plans prepared in advance.

11. Can you work with the sound equipment of the venue?
Many venues will have options to include the use of their “house” sound system. There might be some cost savings if the wedding DJ is willing to utilize the venue’s sound equipment. That said, many of these sound systems are not maintained properly or are of low quality. Ask lots of questions before jumping at any perceived savings.

12. What is the cancellation/change policy?
Ask the wedding DJ to see their contract that details the cancellation/change policy. With the potential of COVID protocols impacting capacity and dates, this information is imperative before committing to any DJ.
